The issue of legalizing abortion is a growing social concern as all life is sacred and valued. However, in recent years there have been two ethical arguments by the Supreme Court in legalizing abortion that of pro-life and pro-choice. Despite the legal acceptance of abortion in some countries, the matter remains an ethical concern (Jones Chaloner, 2007). With this is mind, the writer’s position is pro-life from a deontological perspective. Each of these methods is systematic and hierarchical – from the least complex to the most complex, with each step as important as the next. Bloom’s Taxonomy (New Version) Originally conceptualized by Benjamin Bloom, Bloom’s Taxonomy is perhaps the most popular framework describing man’s learning method. Several theorists have also discussed and provided variations of this method and recently, Lorin Anderson and David Krathwohl proposed a new version of this method. (Wilson, â€Å"Beyond Bloom – A new Version of the Cognitive Taxonomy,† par. 4) In following the template of Bloom’s Taxonomy, the first step involves the acquisition of the knowledge using the senses. It often involves identification, repetition, and memorization. The second step is comprehension. Comprehension occurs when a person can already discuss a concept or idea by explanation or illustration. When an idea can be applied to concrete situations, one has already reached the third step – application. It involves being able to use the concept in more common situations that it can be related to. The fourth step – analysis – includes the ability to scrutinize the concept. The fifth step is evaluation, in which the concept can be judged and criticized based on certain standards. By the sixth step, one shall be able to take the concept apart and use it to form a new complete entity – this is called synthesis. The Scientific Method The steps in the Scientific Method take on a slightly different angle. The first step involves asking the question where the topic to be studied is identified. Next, a background research is conducted about the concept. This is where available previous studies are referred to, so it is determined whether there have been other scientists or researchers who have undertaken the project. Formulation of the hypothesis is next in the process. A good hypothesis is measurable and coherent to the question initially proposed. Tests are to be conducted to try out the validity of the hypothesis. The results of these tests are taken down and evaluated so as to draw conclusions. The results are further evaluated and connected to the previous steps. One analyzes whether there has been positive or negative results coming from the tests that have been conducted. The initial hypothesis is brought out and scrutinized on its validity. With all of the data that have been gathered, a detailed report is constructed to illustrate the details and results of the entire task. One characteristic of the Scientific Method is that one or more of the steps can be repeated if the previous strategy does not yield results or the desirable outcome. Furthermore, there are times when a certain step like â€Å"testing the hypothesis† can be repeated several times in succession until concrete and verifiable results are accomplished. On the other hand, the new model of Bloom’s Taxonomy requires fulfillment of a certain step before moving on to the next level. In fact, one cannot move on to the next level without the completion of the previous one. For example: one cannot apply knowledge which he cannot comprehend first nor one cannot try to comprehend what he does not know of. Universal Troubleshooting Method The Universal Troubleshooting Method is characterized by a five-step program. Initially, a complete description of the problem is taken into account. To prepare for the process, all necessary tools should be present, including the best suitable environment for the project. All of the indications of the problem should be entirely noted detail by detail to ensure that the correct steps are going to be taken in the process of solving it. The Universal Troubleshooting Method is aimed at solving or finding the solution to a particular predicament, while Bloom’s Taxonomy can be used in more levels like learning a new skill – in fact, it is often utilized in a learning environment. This method (Universal Troubleshooting Method) can be more likened to the Scientific Method since it is normally following a dilemma. The steps, although not entirely interchangeable, can be repeated as much as it calls for. These methods require careful planning and execution – each project done following the steps correctly will definitely yield productive results. These three approaches show how to manage a task. Each of these works based on a system that proves to be effective and, thus, valuable. Each system, each step, is geared towards the solution of the problem at hand. In the previous section it has already been discussed that in the second step i.e. loan processing, the information provided in the loan application is verified. A lot of verification is undertaken in this phase which is necessary for checking the credit worthiness of loan applicant. But, the process is time consuming while the other banks are completing this process within shorter time period. Consequently, the customer has to pay higher mortgage payment due to the long time period for processing the refinancing application. Moreover, one customer has complained that the loan approval process took so much time that his credit report, termite inspection report and valuation report got expired. The customer has complained about the so much time-consuming approval process. Additionally, he blamed the bank for expiration of the reports an asked the bank to pay for new reports. A customer complained about that no addition was made to his house property which was valued last year. However, the bank had undertaken valuation of property although it has access to the tax assessment of the client. The time consuming loan approval procedure is affecting the customers in terms of time and money (Omara, 2007). On the other hand, bank is failing to gain customer satisfaction and reputation is affected. It is a major problem for the refinancing process of the retail bank of Vintage Building Society. Inefficient Distribution of Job Responsibilities It has been observed that that single work has been duplicated. The inefficient distribution of job responsibilities has leaded the employees to get involved in a same task. One of the customers has complained about the fact that he was asked about same information from several people. Lack of proper delegation of job responsibilities has leaded to repetition of the same work. It wasted time and disturbed the customers. Another customer complained that he had received a letter from the loan payment specialist. A lot of forms were attached to the letter. The customer complained that it had asked to know about the mortgage payments. According to the customer the same things were filled during the loan closing process and he had agreed upon all the terms. The ignorance and inefficiency of the employees have leaded to these situations. Both the customers and the bank have wasted their time and money for these activities. Lack of proper planning and designing of the work is reflected in t his process (Russell and Taylor, 2009). This is a serious problem of the Vintage Building Society Bank. Errors in Loan Payment Setup It has been found that the customer is complaining about the calls from bank regarding overdue mortgage payment. An automatic system has been established for withdrawing the mortgage payment form the account of the customer. Hence, there is no point of calling the customers regarding the due payment. It can be inferred that the loan payment setup is not efficient. Moreover, the employees are not also serious as they do not make sure whether the payment has been received or not. It is not desired to disturb the customers unnecessarily. The objective of the new service design is to cater the customers in such a so that they can find a convenient way for refinancing. In this case, the customer satisfaction cannot be achieved as they are made bothered about the due mortgage payment where it has been already received at the automatic payment system (Narteh and Kuada, 2014). Design of new Service Blueprint for Improving the Overall Process In the previous section the e major flaws of the service blueprint adopted by the bank of Vintage Building Society have been identified. On the basis of the customer complains principle problems associated with the refinancing process have been discussed. This chapter will focus on improving the refinancing service of the bank of Vintage Building Society. Modified service blueprint of the bank of Vintage Building Society is discussed below: Step 1: Loan Application Customer complaints have helped to recognize that the loan application process is a complicated method. In order to enhance the efficiency of the loan application process and making it simple for the customers following points must be considered. Loan officers must be trained in giving advice regarding the availability of various refinancing options to its customers. Each loan officer must be responsible for dealing with certain number of customers. No other loan officer will be allowed to cater the same customer. A precise and relevant form must be sent to the applicant asking for the required documents for further proceedings. The customer must sign and fill all the necessary fields and submit all the documents for credit check. As soon as the loan officer receives the all the documents and consent from the customer, it must be immediately sent to the loan processing department. Introduction of e-application will helps in simplifying the procedure (Al-Sakran, 2012). Thus the loan application procedure will be less complicated and less time-consuming. In this process, the customers need not to get disturbed several times asking for the information from different loan officers. The organized work structure will help in enhancing the efficiency of the entire refinancing process of the bank o Vintage building Society. Step 2: Loan Processing The loan processing is an important step of the refinancing process. The customers have complained that the refinancing process is very lengthy while compared to other financial institutions. Moreover, it was found that the duplication of work has consumed a lot of time and wasted the money of customer as well as bank. In order to improve the loan processing system in Vintage Building Society the following modifications are recommended: Each loan processing officer must be responsible for processing refinancing application of certain number of customers. No other loan processing officer will deal with that customer file. Employment verification, credit check, verification of the mortgage in case it is issued in other institution must be done simultaneously. The responsibility for the different jobs and verification process must be delegated to the concerned department or individual. Hence, all the activities will occur simultaneously and the credit and verification report can be presented soon. Unnecessary activities must be reduced. If the bank has access to tax returns of the customer, valuation of the property is irrelevant. Hence, bank can reduce its activities by accessing to the reliable sources of information. Thus, both time and money can be saved (Mahadevan, 2010). If any issue has been encountered by the loan processing officer, he can contact the loan officer immediately for clarifying the issue. The loan processing officer must approach the loan officer who had previously dealt with the file and the customer. As the loan officer has an idea about that specific case, the issue can be easily resolved with the assistance of the concerned loan officer. After successful completion of the verification process, the loan processing officer must send the file to loan officer or the societys board for approval. This process will help in cutting down the unnecessary activities of the loan processing department. Proper delegation of job roles will help in performing the job role efficiently (Kumar and Suresh, 2009). This process will require less time and save money of bank as well as the customer. Step 3: Loan Closing Once the verification report is received by the loan processing officer, it is set to the loan officer or to the societys board for approval. If the refinancing application is approved, the loan closing officer is responsible for communicating with the customer regarding the terms and conditions of the refinancing. He sends a formal letter explaining about the mortgage cost, conditions attached with relevant documents (Schneider, 2003). If the customer agrees upon the terms and conditions, he must send them back signing on the required documents for finalizing the loan. In this step, the following modifications are necessary: The loan closing officer must send a letter where detailed information of the terms and conditions will be provided. The letter must be composed in lucid language and he must clarify each point when the customer finds difficulty in comprehending any clause (Slack, Chambers and Johnston, 2001). The final loan amount and the payment amount must be calculated by the loan closing officer an immediately communicated to the customer through e-mail. In this phase, the customer must not be made bothered by asking about the same information which has already been collected during the loan application. Loan closing officer must efficiently arrange settlement between the solicitor of the customer and the other mortgage holder. It must not take long time (Mckinsey.com, 2014). Thus in this step, the settlement is done smoothly and the terms and conditions are clearly communicated to the loan applicant. Experienced and expert personnel were appointed for handling the refinancing process. However, some flaws are identified from the customer complaints. It has been found that ineffective delegation of works had leaded a lengthy as well as complicated refinancing process. In this report the principle limitations of the refinancing process have been recognized and discussed. Complicated application procedure, extensively time consuming loan processing method, improper delegation of job responsibilities, erroneous loan payment setup etc has leaded to increasing number of customer complaints. Some suggestions have been made for improving the refinanci ng process with the aid of new service blueprint. The Beginning of the Civil Rights Movement Michelle Brown The Beginning of the Civil Rights Movement The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s were a profound turning point in American History. African American’s had been fighting for equality for many years but in the early 1950s the fight started to heighten, from Rosa Parks, to Martin Luther King Jr. , to Malcolm X, the fight would take on many different forms over the span of two decades, and was looked at from many different points of view. The Beginning of the Civil Rights Movement For most historians the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement started on December 1, 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white person on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This is when the rise of the Civil Rights Movement began; however, there were several previous incidents which helped to lead up to the movement. In 1951, the â€Å"Martinsville Seven† were all African American men tried by an all white jury in the rape of a white woman from Virginia. All seven were found guilty, and for the first time in Virginia history, were sentenced to the death penalty for rape. Webspinner, 2004-2009). In this same year the African American students at Moton High decided to strike against the unequal educational treatment. Their case was later added to the Brown v Board of Education suit in 1954. (Webspinner, 2004-2009). In June 1953, a bus boycott was held in Baton Rouge, LA. After the bus drivers refused to enforce Ordinance 222, an ordinance which changed segregated seati ng on buses so that African American’s would fill the bus from the back forward and whites would fill it from the front back on a first come first serve basis, the Ordinance was overturned. Led by Reverend Jemison and other African American businessmen, the African American community decided to boycott the bus system. Later in the month Ordinance 251 was put in place, allowing a section of the bus to be black only and a section to be white only, the rest of the bus would be first come first serve. (Webspinner, 2004-2009). In May 1954, Chief Justice Earl Warren delivered the following verdict on Brown v Board of Education. His second point was that nonviolent resistance would awaken moral shame in a protestor’s opponent, which would then lead the opponent to understanding and friendship. Kings third point was nonviolent resistance was a battle against evil not a battle against individuals. His fourth point stated that su ffering was required in nonviolent resistance, â€Å"Accordingly, the end was more important than safety, and retaliatory violence would distract from the main fight. † (McElrath, 2009). King’s fifth point was, the nonviolent resister was on the side of Justice. His final point was the power of love rests with nonviolent resisters, this is the love of understanding not of affection, â€Å"Bitterness and hate were absent from the resister mind, and replaced with love. † (McElrath, 2009). King continued to preach nonviolent resistance through all the boycotts, sit-ins, protest marches, and speeches. After being arrested in the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott of 1963, he wrote letters from the Birmingham jail about nonviolent resistance. Later in 1963 he led a massive march on Washington DC, this is where he delivered his I Have A Drams speech. In 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Up until his assassination in April 1968, â€Å"he never wavered in his insistence that nonviolence must remain the central tactic of the civil-rights movement, nor in his faith that everyone in America would some day attain equal justice. † (Chew, 1995-2008). Malcolm X Malcolm X, whom at one time was a minister for the Nation of Islam, had a more militant style to attain rights for African Americans. After the Washington DC march he did not understand why African Americans had been so excited about a demonstration, â€Å"run by whites in front of a statue of a president who has been dead for a hundred years and who didn’t like us when he was alive. (Adams, 2009). Malcolm, to the protestors, represented a militant revolutionary who would stand up and fight to win equality, while also being a person who wanted to bring on positive social services and was an exceptional role model. In fact, it was the customs of Malcolm X which were severely rooted in the academic founda tions of the Black Panther Party. Malcolm X was murdered in 1965, but his beliefs lived on for long after. Capital punishment is therefore the only appropriate punishment for murder. But the lex talionis is deeply flawed. It focuses on the harm done by offenders without regard to their mental states. A life may be taken intentionally or accidentally; a person may be killed for personal gain or in order to relieve him or her of the agony of a terminal illness. Even if we restrict the scope of the lex talionis to cases in which the wrongdoing is fully intentional, there is still the problem about the level at which the punishment should imitate the crime (Singer, 1993). Should murderers be killed in exactly the manner that they killed their victims? In any case, it is impossible to apply the lex talionis to many offenders; the penniless thief, the tooth assailant who knocks out his victim’s teeth, the tax evader, etc. If conscious of the defects of the lex talionis, retributivists merely insist that the punishment should be appropriate to the moral gravity of the offence, then this requirement can be satisfied so long as the murderer is punished more severely than less serious offenders. There is no need for capital punishment. From the utilitarian point of view, capital punishment can only be justified if it produces better consequences than less severe forms of punishment. So a utilitarian will try to settle the issue on the basis of the evidence about the effects of capital punishment. The statistical evidence is based on comparisons of murder rates in countries where there is capital punishment with those in socially similar countries where there is no capital punishment, and no comparisons of the murder rates in one and the same country at different times when it had capital punishment and when it later abolished it, or when it restored capital punishment after a period of abolition. The evidence does not show that capital punishment is a superior deterrent. However, the utilitarian approach is rejected by those who wish to place greater value on the lives of the innocent victims of murder than on the lives of convicted murderers. It is suggested that the evidence does not conclusively rule out the superior deterrence of capital punishment, and in the presence of such uncertainty, it is better to have capital punishment. Harry Potter A young, scrawny boy who wears horn-rimmed glasses and has a scar on his forehead has catapulted into the hearts of millions of readers, young and old alike. This same boy has generated nationwide controversy over censorship versus freedom of speech. In particular, the community of Zeeland, Michigan has banned reading aloud from Harry Potter and required written parental permission to check the book out from the school library. Although the Zeeland community as well as other segments of the population claim that the Harry Potter books should be censored because they believe wizardry is a dark and malignant reality, Harry Potter should be made available to all children because he reinforces a sense of good and evil, provides a protagonist that embodies Christian values, and nurtures a lifelong love for literature. Millions of children around the world along with a good many adults are now familiar with Harry Potter. Created by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter is an orphan who, for the first eleven years of his life, has lived with and suffered abuse from his relatives, the Dursleys. His life changes dramatically, however, when he turns eleven and finds out that he is in fact a wizard and will be attending Hogwarts, a wizardry school. Adventures abound as Harry begins his new life learning to be a wizard. The Harry Potter books, four of which have been published, with another three planned, are so hugely popular that the New York Times Book Review was forced to revise their best-seller list in order to appease publishers and authors of adult material.
